Gone are the days where you’d need to take a plane or paraglider up in the air to get those incredible perspectives to turn the world 4D. All we need to do now is shop on Amazon or any online retailer and within a few days you can have your very own helicopter and film crew in the size of a shoe box. It’s incredible to think how fast the world and technology is changing around us.
“For once you have tasted flight you will walk earth with your eyes turned skyward , for there you have been and there you will long to return”.
Leonardo Da Vinci
My life changed the moment I took my first paraglider flight. I had gone to Nepal to learn how to fly and after 3 days of ground handling in the summer heat, our group were all more than ready to take that first flight. We drove up the hill until we reached the top and way below us lie the valley floor some 750 metres below. My palms began to sweat as I clipped my self in and my heart began to race. We had trained for 3 days and we could all launch the glider perfectly there in the field but up here was a different story. The air was calm and I heard a crackling over the radio, the girl in front of me had landed so now it was my turn.
I was there waiting and I heard my instructor give me the ok, I didn’t need to be told twice so without hesitation I began to move forward, inflating my glider and feeling the pressure of the lines against my forearms. Once the glider was over my head I took off full gas and floated out and into the valley below. looking down over all the rice fields and having only air beneath was like no other sensation, it’s not even comparable to flying in a plane. That was the moment that I fell in love with flying.
Fast forward a few months to January 2014 and I bought my first ever drone. It was an Iris Plus made by 3DRobotics and for its time it promised a lot. Follow me and easy flying had me hooked and just like flying in the paraglider, I could get some incredible perspectives that I couldn’t even get from flying.
Now in 2017, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to our flying friends and the sky is literally the limit with what they can do. If you’re thinking about buying one then you really should. They will change the way you see adventure and the world for the better and open up new possibilities. and hopefully you’ll experience that same phenomenon that I got that first time I ever went flying.
Be wary though of the drone rules when you’re flying them as there is a lot of restricted air space that can get you in a lot of trouble. Countries like India have made it illegal to fly a drone without a commercial licence and there have been countless stories of naive drone operators getting into trouble flying them where they weren’t supposed to.
